  3. Thank you for your comments. I do want to say a copule of comments on the denying the rebels arms’ things. First of all, it’s not like arms themselves are some natural human right. You might believe that our second amendment represents a universal right, but even that doesn’t guarantee anyone a right to be given any specific arms. We wouldn’t be denying them the use of arms, but deciding not to arm them ourselves. There is a difference there. Second, I think the arguments against arming the rebels (and not just in this conflict, but pretty much any conflict) go a lot deeper than protecting people from themselves. I’m sure Diana could go into this much more effectively and in greater depth than I could, but there are all kinds of effects that come from arming a population, especially considering how little is done to track what happens to those arms after they are given out. It’s not just about protecting the rebels from themselves, but protecting neighbors and ourselves. Arms tend not to stay put, especially in the chaos of a conflict zone. They could end up in other hands, in other places, in other conflicts, now and well down the line. Read . There are some scary passages in there about the floods of AK47s the Soviets sent out around the world. U.S. and other nations’ troops are still being killed with those guns in conflicts all over the planet. The same certainly goes for weapons we handed out, too. Do you want to bet against the likelihood that U.S. troops have been killed in Afghanistan by weapons we gave to the mujahideen when they were fighting the Soviets? Once you hand them out, you never know where they will end up. This is a crucial consideration when deciding to arm a movement like the Syrian opposition, and a major risk that has to be weighed. For me, I think there’s is much greater potential for harm than benefit.
